Chester Marathon Training - Week 7 Run 1

This was my first run in 10 days after a failed attempt at running a half marathon (I had to cut it short due to flash floods that had me swimming in the road). I hadn’t planned on missing a week’s marathon training but unfortunately I had some blood tests done recently and they showed that I was suffering from iron deficiency anemia again. It’s something that I suffer from quite regularly and I didn’t realise how bad it had got until I started back on iron tablets. I spent a large proportion of last week either asleep or watching the Olympics and fighting off sleep. Thankfully i’m now feeling less like a member of the walking dead and more like a fully functioning member of society, so it was time to get back on the marathon training wagon.

It’s been so hot lately that I decided to get up and go straight out for an early morning run before the heat became unbearable. This turned out to be an unmitigated disaster of an idea. I was hungry, thirsty, irritable, tired, hot, sweaty and ready to scratch somebody’s eyes out by the end of it. It was a struggle just to put one foot in front of the other never mind try to do a decent time. However, i’ve learned some valuable lessons from today’s run. The most important is I can’t function without having eaten in the past couple of hours, so if I want an early morning run I need to get up a couple of hours earlier, eat something, go back to sleep and then go run. When I did get home I showered, ate, bathed my feet in an ice bath and then promptly fell asleep for 4 hours. Low iron + marathon training = exhausted Jo. I’m just thankful that i’ve got another 18 days left to get my iron levels up before going back to work, so I can have as many post-running naps as I want before then. I wonder if there’s any iron-rich cakes out there…
